西暦二一九九年、地球は、生物絶滅の危機に瀕していた…。
地球侵略をくわだてるガミラスの遊星爆弾は、地上に雨のように降り注ぎ、
人類はその住居の地を地下に求めていた。
しかし、その地下にも放射能の汚染は容赦なく進み、人類滅亡まであと一年と迫る。
そんな時、地球をはるか一四万八千光年の宇宙の彼方、イスカンダル星からメッセージが届いた。
イスカンダルには放射能除去装置があり、それを取りに来いというのだ。
そして一緒に送られて来た波動エンジンの設計図をもとに作られた宇宙戦艦ヤマトで
イスカンダルまで往復二九万六千光年の旅へ出発する。

In the year 2199, the Earth is on the verge of biological extinction.
In a plot to invade Earth, Gamilas bombards the planet with meteorite bombs, which come down like rain, forcing humanity to seek shelter underground.
Underground, however, radioactive contamination continues to spread relentlessly, and the obliteration of humanity is just a year away.
It is then that a message arrives from Iscandar, a planet located 148,000 light years away from the Earth.
It states that a radiation removal device is available on Iscandar and instructs Earth to retrieve it.
Thus begins a 296,000 light-year round journey to Iscandar in the Space Battleship Yamato, built based on blueprints for a wave motion engine that were included with the message.
